  Think correct kangaroo rat. Nocturnal & favorite dinner of coyotes, owls. Protected species in several CA counties. My 3 cents 😃

  Yes, appears to be a Dipodomys/Kangaroo rat/K-rat. This is perfect habitat for these desert-adapted small mammals.
