Condor Watch Talk

About the poser up front (adult)

Does anyone recognize this bird? It's like he knew the camera was there and wanted to pose! I see a black tag that ends in a 1, but that's all I got.

    Hi!

This is Black 18 - 3 dots - who happened to be classified in this photo by Aegypius 10 minutes after yours but was turned so the tag showed. How's that for timing?!

Black 18 3-dots loves that scale so much they're standing there all that time, but this is common. They love being up high and surveying the Kingdom, so to speak 😃 And all seem do seem to "pose". The condors can also be seen playing around them and there's some pretty funny pictures. One of the mysteries we've talked about are photos where the condors seem obsessed with something under the scale and the only thing we can guess is it could be an insect or lizard they're chasing. Since they don't hunt or kill these things to eat, this doesn't make any sense but some of these photos show several of them relentlessly trying to get at something in those rocks.

We have photos of other birds on the scales, too, as everyone seems to want to get into the act: eagles, ravens, turkey vultures and even owls.

The scales are placed out there so that if we're able to see the entire tag number, and color, plus the weight, we enter it on TALK with the hash tag #scale so a record can be made as to the health of the bird (you can see how to do this on any photo that is already done) It would look like: #scale Black47 Underline 19 pounds

All that info is in the Help board here. with a large picture of the scale showing the numbers.

    Thanks for the question!
