Whale carcasses for condors

  • Psaltriparus_minimus by Psaltriparus_minimus

I think in one of my college classes I heard of a theory that Ca condors used to help dispose of beached whales. I was thinking about that because I read about some whale burials. So I was just wondering what people think of the idea and how close to the dead whales condors are known to be. It is hard to imagine enough condors in the right place to take care of it before people complain of the smell.

Condors do feed on whales! Indeed condors were observed feeding on a grey whale carcass on a central Ca coast beach (around Big Sur) for months. I think the problem is that there aren't enough condors to be able to deal with a dead whale in the time frame that people would want it to be gone (they are quite pungent!).

I bet condors will feed on just about any dead flesh. Except for Jello Horse. 😄

You have stumbled upon a brilliant idea, DZM! If they made bullets taste like the Jello Horse this would solve the entire lead poisoning problem, wouldn't it? 😃
